About Our Church

We invite you to join us for Sunday worship, Bible study, and Christian fellowship as we seek to grow together in the grace and love of Jesus Christ.

Our Story

Serving Roanoke since 1893

As Brethren, we affirm the Lordship of Jesus Christ. We, as did our predecessors, continue to search the Scriptures to discover correct beliefs and practices. Our worship is an intimate and both a personal and corporate celebration of our new life in Christ. We seek to be personally renewed and to grow inwardly and outwardly. Love for Christ and His people is freely shared as we gather around the Word and under the Spirit, and as we respond to God’s grace.

Purpose

What We Offer

Loving God

Loving Others

“As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”

John 13:34

Making Disciples

“Make disciples, baptize them, and teach them.”

Matthew 28:19-20

Our Pastor

Pastor Ken Thompson returned to RBC in January of 2019. His education, experience, and background make him an ideal fit for our church and community.

Ken’s wife, Barbara, is his partner in life and in ministry. She’s a vibrant member of our church community.

A “Neighborhood Church”

We believe there is value in being part of a church community that is near where we live because it adds value and connection to the place we care about: our neighborhood.

It is natural to have relationships with neighbors, so it is more likely you will be aware of issues that need support or transformation. Homeowners in particular appear to like the idea that their neighborhood is as good as it can be. Being part of a local church promotes the development and transformation that you are working towards within your local community.

When there are a lot of people living close to the church building, walking, talking, connecting and relating to each other, those who are not part of that faith community will notice. Care for neighbors is shared. The feel of community is intensified.

Living a Life of Faith

God has made available to us in Jesus Christ and the Spirit, in Scripture and the church, all the resources needed to live the life of faith.

By His life Christ exemplified the walk to which we are called; by His death, He made possible renewed fellowship with the Father; by His resurrection, He revealed the power that is available to us.

The Holy Spirit now enables us as God’s children to live in obedience to Scripture and grow in spiritual maturity.

Scripture provides the teaching and example of Jesus and the apostles which we are to follow as a loving response to God and as a means of glorifying Him.

The church is the gathered community which nurtures believers in the life of faith.

Using these resources, we can demonstrate the new birth through new behavior. What we are by faith in Christ we are to become by faithfulness to our Lord.

How We Worship

The church worships when believers gather to praise and honor the living God. His nature and works call forth responses of reverence, submission, adoration, and celebration. These responses take the forms of reading and declaring His Word, praying, singing, giving, and other activities that glorify God.

We seek balance in our worship celebrations: form and freedom, traditional and contemporary, relational and relevant.

Biblical Preaching and Teaching

Good, solid, and Biblical preaching is as important as ever because a huge amount of bad and heretical teaching is easily accessible to everybody today. All you have to do is get on your smartphone and you can find any ideology out there all wrapped up nice and neat and seemingly true. A vast amount of misinformation is out there. This is a problem we combat with biblical preaching. Even the most committed Christians are going to run into shaky theological teachings out in the world. We must be ready for that.
